Fairytales vs reality

I had my students write a fairytale in French and present it to the class like a play. 4 out of 5 groups did a great job which was wonderful! I was very proud of them. The 5th group did not do wonderfully. I offered them the chance to redo it the next day, but they didn't seem to care that they did not do well and declined my offer.

I have encountered that same attitude repeatedly in various students of mine and I find it utterly perplexing. Most teachers are type-A perfectionists who did well in school, so it's hard to understand students who are not that way. But I'm trying to remember to work on giving grace and being merciful in my class.

Maybe those kids have it figured out. Maybe they've realized that getting straight A's in high school and going to college and getting even more good grades really just lands you back in high school, teaching the same subjects you dreamed of leaving behind once and for all when you were 16...
